Finding Power Output of Hydroelectric Turbines

The Hydroelectric turbine passes 500m^3/s across a head of 180m. What is the maximum possible power output of the hydroelectric turbine shown in figure?

Solution:

Bernoulli's Equation

To calculate the maximum power output possible, we can use the formula:

This is the theoretical maximum power output.
In reality, the actual amount of power generated will be less due to a number of factors including:
  • Friction losses in the turbine and generator
  • Electrical losses in the transmission and distribution system
  • Inefficiency in the turbine and generator
  • Unforeseen events such as equipment failures or maintenance downtimes
All of these factors can reduce the actual power output of the hydroelectric turbine.
